MONZA - RACE
Andrea Gagliardini emerges from the crowd
Andrea Gagliardini won the first C1 Cup race in 2007, after starting from the fifth position. Behind him on the podium were Casillo, the reigning champion, and the 2006 runner-up, Francesco Savoia.
In qualifying Fulgenzi took pole in a session that was hit by timekeeping problems. He managed to do just a tenth better than Savoia, who also just shaded Casillo. Behind them the Gagliardini brothers took 4th and 5th respectively, with Francesco just ahead of Andrea. In sixth position there was Milla. Alex Campani had to start from the back of the grid following an engine failure in practice.
At the start Savoia immediately overtook Fulgenzi, as Casillo behind them managed to keep Francesco Gagliardini behind. His brother Andrea hit Milla forcing him out. At the Ascari chicane Fulgenzi felt pressure from Casillo and spun to rejoin the field in 14th position. The battle allowed Tricerri, who had started 7th, to finish the first lap in 3rd position.
In the meanwhile, on the straight before the first chicane, Serratore had heavily hit the concrete wall after a contact which also involved Bifulco. The driver was stuck in the car as a result and it was necessary to aid him with an ambulance. As a consequence, the Safety Car was deployed. The injuries for Serratore were not worrying, though.
At the restart Savoia kept the first position, as Casillo behind him had to brake very late to keep Tricerri behind. In the rest of the lap, A. Gagliardini managed a wonderful comeback, being thhird at the Ascari. Once in Parabolica, Casillo attacked Savoia who was too surprised to realise that A. Gagliardini also squeezed himself in the space and overtook.
In the next lap, Casillo had to surrender at the Roggia, but A. Gagliardini did not seeme to be able to pull away. Behind them Francesco Gagliardini overtook Tricerri.
In fact during lap 7 Casillo set a time of 2.42”388 which gave him the fastest lap (with a 2 point bonus) and the new track record. But it was also during this lap that the driver from Campania realised he did not have enough power to attack and only tried to disturb his young rival in the rest of the race. Meanwhile the battle for 3rd was heating up with Savoia, F. Gagliardini and Tricerri all battling for the lowest spot of the podium.
Under the chequered flag Andrea Gagliardini took his first C1 Cup win, ahead of Casillo and Savoia who kept Francesco Gagliardini and Roberto Tricerri behind. Behind them, after a beautiful comeback finished Fulgenzi, Campani and Milla, as Verdiani and Troja rounded up the top 10. The drivers making their debut in the championship, with the exception of Francesco Gagliardini, all finished outside the top 10, with Saggese in 11th, Carotenuto 15th, the actor Ettore Bassi, who is famous for the TV fiction “Carabinieri”, in 16th, and Raviglione who finished 17th. Pavoni had to retire.
In The Under 25 èit was Andrea Gagliardini to win, ahead of Savoia and his brother Francesco.
In the Over 40, Casillo claimed his seventh win in a row ahead of Milla and Troja.
